A late Regency Period giltwood convex mirror, the frame of rope twist form, surmounted with a carved hippocampus set upon rocks.

The hippocampus is essentially a sea-horse, to use the English appellation. However, it is also a creature shared by both Phoenician and Greek mythologies. The stylised form presented here relates entirely to the hippocampus, rather than any true physiognomical understanding of an actual sea horse.
