A pair of early 19th century mahogany card tables, each having a finely figured D-end top above a column stem and set upon a plinth with four scrolling feet.

The swivelling tops opening to reveal a baize surface for card games

By the Regency Period, card games had long been popular in England and were an expected part of entertainment in polite society. Chairs would be drawn up to tables for games such as Whist, Napoleon and Quadrille among many others. These tables, set on plinths with four scrolling feet, would have made seating more comfortable than the earlier examples which had four legs. Once, the game had finished, the tables could be closed and placed back against the walls of a salon.
