Depth 15 inches (38.10 cm)

An early 19th century Gustavian period pedestal or centre table having a square marble top set into a gilded cornice with ebonised details and mouldings in the Classical taste, set upon tapering legs headed by gilded spheres above ebonised palmettes and Greek key motifs upon spiral turned supports, all terminating in a faux painted marbled plinth with central carved ebonised finial.

This table was made to support an object of importance, most probably a marble sculpture or porphyry urn. It was made for a grand residence, probably in Stockholm or Gothenburg or perhaps an aristocratic country home. The combination of bright, burnished gilt gesso work against mat gilding and ebonised detailing creates a pleasing contrast of surfaces in imitation of applied bronze castings.

Today, this table could be used either for its original intended purpose, or as a lamp table for an alcove or perhaps to be placed between two bay windows in a grand room.
