An early 19th century Gustavian tole tray table, the surfaces decorated with gilded borders upon a red ground, having brass handles and set upon a later bamboo stand in the Chinese manner.

This table was made for the serving of drinks in a grand home, the decoration is a rare survival which has been executed in the Classical taste in accordance with the fashions of the early 19th century. Painted tin became especially fashionable around the Empire period in France and objects made from Tole were decorated in brightly coloured paint and typically with gold highlights for contrast. In addition to trays, metal workers fashioned lamps, chestnut urns, and desk sets out of tin to be painted with elaborate designs.

Tole has a magical quality and this tray would add a focal point as an eye-catcher in any contemporary drawing room.
