A mid 18th century George III Period carved giltwood mirror in the Rococo manner, having a cresting of three palm trees, the frame composed of C-scrolls, rocaille, flowers and foliage about the original oval plate.

This finely carved mid 18th century mirror is a good example of Rococo design from the 1760s in England. The motifs deployed, namely C-scrolls and rockwork, are fundamental stylistic elements to Chippendale Rococo period design. More unusual is the palm tree carving within the cresting, a feature which is seldom seen at this time.

The scale of this mirror makes it an intimate piece, most suited to a smaller room such as a parlour or bedroom, landing or ante room. The soft mercury plate gives a subtle abstract reflection which any lends itself to soft lighting. In this image we have used a black cloth to disguise the camera within the reflection.
