Studio of Pierre Gobert c.1695
Portrait of Madame de Maintenon depicted with her black servant
Oil on canvas; held in a 17th century carved giltwood frame

Provenance: A French noble family and by descent since the seventeenth century.

Madame de Maintenon (1635-1719) was the second wife of King Louis XIV of France. Her marriage to the king was never officially announced nor was it admitted and yet she was very influential at Court.

Pierre Gobert was one of the great court painters of this period. He was invariably in demand by royalty and nobility as a portrait artist. This studio painting would almost certainly have been produced for a member of the French Court.
