A nineteenth century blue and white glazed porcelain jar of bulbous form, with double happiness characters upon a foliate ground. Now mounted as a lamp with turned giltwood base.

Height dimensions refer only to lamp and giltwood base.

Typically the double happiness character is written in Chinese calligraphy, and frequently appears on traditional decorative items such as caskets and porcelain, being associated with marriage. The double happiness symbol often features throughout the wedding ceremony, as well as on gifts given to the bride and groom. This vase was most certainly a gift at a wedding in the nineteenth century.
