Two late 19th century porcelain peaches, with brilliant pink and green glazes and naturally modelled leaves.

In Chinese art, peaches are a very popular and reoccurring motif. They represent immortality, good health and longevity, said to have grown in the orchard of the Queen Mother of the West. Further to this, the wood of a peach tree represents protection of life and the self. Taoist monks use the peach wood to carve swords in order to perform exorcisms. Feng Shui items, carved from the wood and the kernels oft the peach protect homes from ghosts and danger.

Qing Dynasty, Gungxu Period (1875 – 1908)
