Rupert Muldoon

Egg tempera on gesso panel

Rupert Muldoon:

‘Shadowed Waters IV was painted in the late summer when the colours were just on the turn, and there was quite a breeze so the water was really rippled and I tried to capture that with the painting. People often say it looks as I have woven it – or it’s somehow a piece of cloth because you see the colours from underneath. It’s a particular favourite bow that drops into the water and, just like that point where Leonardo’s hands touch, I think it creates a point of tension within the painting.

In ‘Shadowed Waters IV’ the horizon is at the top of the painting. The viewer’s eye must travel up, following the rhythm of reflections, searching for what they recognise in order to make sense of the complete work.’
