A 19th Century Directoire Style Walnut Commode

£6,500

SOLD

A very fine late-19th century walnut commode in the Directoire Manner with a gris St Anne marble top above three finely figured long drawers with brass medallion handles, oval lock escutcheons and beading between chamfered front ends, the sides with panels of the same, the whole raised on square tapering legs with the original brass sabot feet.

This exceptionally crafted commode is of extraordinary quality. In accordance with the Directoire Style, this commode is Classically inspired and rational in construction; it bears little decoration aside from symmetrical geometric shapes. The patina of the wood has mellowed with age while its grain forms interesting patterns all around. The brass elements, such as the beads framing the panelling, the band separating the first tier from the second, the lock escutcheons and the round handles all add warmth to the piece. The marble top creates a stark contrast to the body of the commode, hence distinguishing it from more formal and demure pieces of the same category.

This commode is, in every way, well balanced, expertly crafted and using only the finest materials.
