A 19th Century Lacquered Commode or Chest of Drawers in the Transitional Manner

£5,900

SOLD

A late nineteenth century Coromandel lacquer three drawer commode in the transitional manner, the finely veined original black marble top above three shaped long drawers, all set upon tall cabriole legs with brass capped feet.

This chest follows the European tradition of incorporating Chinese Export lacquer panels within furniture making. This piece is made in the Transitional manner which stylistically breached the gap between rococo and neo-classical design. The shaped top, front and legs all correspond with Louis XV rocaille forms, while the medallion handles and classical lock escutcheons welcome in the Louis XVI era in furniture design history.
