A Late 18th Century Directoire Period Mahogany Commode

£4,500

SOLD

A finely figured late 18th century Directoire Period mahogany commode of generous proportions, the overhanging top above three short panelled drawers with medallion brass plates above two long drawers of the same, all set between fluted column ends and raised upon turned tapering feet with brass caps.

Directoire furniture is far more restrained than pieces from the previous Louis XVI style. It features less elaborate ornamentation and generally embraces a purer Classical decoration. This can be seen, for example, in the unadorned fluted columns extending vertically on either side of the piece.

The rich colour of the wood lends a certain grandeur and weight to the commode. The medallion brass handles and lock escutcheons create a contrast adding further gravitas to the piece.
