A Late 18th Century Directoire Period Mahogany Commode

£4,950

SOLD

A fine late 18th century mahogany commode, the white rectangular marble top upon three drawers, articulated with applied brass stringing and fluting, and having finely chased escutcheons and handles (of later date and one varying slightly), the sides with brass mounted panels, the whole raised on turned tapering legs.

This mahogany commode was made right at the end of the 18th century. While the turned legs and fluting hark back to the Regal style of the Louis XVI Period, it has a Classical purity which looks forward to Empire design.
