A Late 18th Century Mahogany Commode or Chest of Drawers

£5,900

SOLD

A 19th century two drawer commode, the shaped grey marble top set upon a mahogany veneered chest of two long drawers with brass beaded panels, escutcheons, and ring handles, between stop-fluted columnar sides with ormolu mounts, all raised upon turned tapering legs terminating in brass sabots.

This commode has a Classical purity of form: the only decoration is architectural, such as the ormolu foliate stop-fluting and medallion handles. This piece would have been placed most probably under a large mirror or important painting, thus providing a visual anchor in a grand room setting. Louis XVI commodes also work well in modern settings, as eye-catchers, adding gravitas to contemporary schemes.
