A Transitional Commode

£4,900

SOLD

A mid-eighteenth century Transitional commode, the parquetry veneered front and sides with ormolu mounts and raised on lightly shaped cabriole legs, with speckled white marble top.

The combination of classical ornament together with curvaceous forms employed throughout this piece, is specific to the Transitional Period in French furniture design at the end of Louis XV’s reign and at the succession of Louis XVI. It illustrates the gradual departure of Rococo forms and the advent of Classicism as the two styles fought for supremacy.
