A finely figured late 18th century mahogany bookcase, the shaped cornice above glazed and panelled doors flanked by finely turned corners, set above two short drawers with brass handles and terminating in two block feet.
This piece marks the transition from eighteenth century to early nineteenth century furniture design. The finely turned corners closely resemble the detailing favoured by the cabinet maker George Seddon (1727-1801) and his contemporaries. The overall simplicity of the piece shows a decided departure from ornament in favour of sparse decoration and purity of form. In this respect, furniture design at the turn of the nineteenth century reflected the architectural philosophy of the age.
