A pair of 18th century George III Period mahogany bedside commodes of rich colour and figuring, the shaped tray tops having pierced galleries over lift-up cupboard doors above a leather lined recessed lower section, all raised upon square chamfered legs.

Pairs of bedside cupboards, or ‘night tables’, as they were generally known in the 18th century, are today extremely rare. Although he does not include a drawing in the Director, Chippendale was providing similar examples to clients, a large mahogany night table and necessary stool £2.15.0′ was supplied to Mersham le Hatch in 1767.
