20th Century Pair of Painted Faux Bamboo Cockpen Open Armchairs

£2,400

SOLD

A pair of mid-20th century faux bamboo cockpen open armchairs in the Chinese Chippendale taste, with white painted decoration, having ochre highlights, retaining the original cane work seats.

This pair of armchairs is inspired by designs for chairs in the Chinese manner by Thomas Chippendale. Chinoiserie, although most closely associated with 17th and 18th century designs enjoyed a renaissance in the 1st half of the 20th century as people continued to celebrate oriental influence in interior decoration. Such a pair of chairs might have been employed by decorators such as John Fowler and Nancy Lancaster who employed Chinoiserie designs in so many of their projects. These would be well suited to a bedroom, intimate drawing room or even a conservatory setting.
