An 18th Century Set of Four George II Period Walnut Side Chairs

£5,500

SOLD

A good George II Period set of four walnut side chairs of rich colour, each having a shaped top rail above a splat back with boxwood herringbone inlay, the drop in seats above a deep apron, set upon cabriole legs with carved scallop shells, the back legs conjoined with a turned stretcher.

The seat frames all numbered: I , II, III, IIII

During this period, the use of walnut for fine furniture construction was at the height of European fashion as a rich material that retained its crisp colour, grain and carving. These chairs demonstrate how the Irish taste was informed by the rococo style of the period, visible in the shape of the back and cabriole legs together with the inlay of herringbone boxwood for decoration. However, they are notable for the way in which the rococo properties of the chairs are mannered, not being excessive or grand in their decorative elements. A further distinct feature of these period chairs is the scallop design carved on the chair legs. This was a popular and recognisable feature that largely distinguished Irish furniture of this period with those of English or Scottish origin.
