An Early 18th Century George I Walnut Wing Armchair

£5,900

SOLD

A fine George I Period wing armchair, the shaped seat frame with scrolling armrests and all supported upon generously carved cabriole legs with pad feet.

This type of armchair can be traced back to late 17th century seat furniture, specifically the William & Mary Period in design history. The wings were designed as draft excluders to keep the sitter protected from the cold. By the reigns of Queen Anne and George I, the form became softer and more elegantly proportioned as in this example. One marked transformation of design was the cabriole leg with its pad foot, dating this chair to the end of the first quarter of the 18th century.
