A fine late nineteenth century rectangular red lacquer panel, decorated with figurative scenes in gilt and polychrome, mounted on a mid-twentieth century beechwood base in the Louis XVI manner, as a low table.

The wooden table base was clearly made in the mid-20th century to hold this earlier Chinese Export lacquer panel. In this respect it follows in the eighteenth century tradition of combining imported oriental lacquer with European forms to create functional yet fantastical furniture.
