A pair of large scale carved and painted wall lights in the Adam taste, the back of each carved with intertwined husks above a bracket with two scrolling candle arms, one having beaded socles, the other with gadrooned socles.
Robert Adam (1728-92) played an important role in developing Neo-classical architecture in Britain. His projects notably extended beyond pure architecture, to the development of a unified style for interior decoration. The architect designed every object, both fixed and moveable, for use in each room.
Adam’s interior designs drew on ancient Greek and Roman motifs, observed during his Grand Tour, beginning in 1754. On his return, he established a London practice with his brother James. The brothers developed the Adam style, which can be seen in London at Kenwood House, Osterley Park and Syon House.
