A Pair of Early 20th Century Gustavian Style Crystal Wall Lights

£1,250

SOLD

A fine pair of early 20th century cut glass wall lights in the Gustavian manner, the faceted crystal drops set upon brass frames, each supporting two candle socles.

‘Gustavian’ furniture came into being after the Swedish King Gustav III visited Versailles. Being known for funding the arts and culture, the King took inspiration from the French and commissioned items with clean and light neo-classical features, incorporating plenty of candles. The economic growth Sweden experienced during the 18th century allowed for the style to be adopted across the country.

Gustavian style, due to its symmetrical ornamentation and restrained grandeur, is very much back in fashion today. It marries well with contemporary tastes, adding a focal point which is both stunning and understated.
