A 19th century bottle vase with rich sang de boeuf flambé glazes.
Durning the early Qing Period the art of Sang de Boeuf was re-established and colours varying from dark reds to dark purples, sometimes streaked with splashes of turquoise, came back into fashion. The copper added to the overglaze lamé mixture lends Oxblood pieces their vivid red or purple colour. Although this technique was very difficult since copper is a very volatile material, the challenge it poses did not discouraged craftsmen and Sang de Boeuf gained an important place in Chinese porcelain manufacture.
