Height 5 inches (12.70 cm)
Width 4 inches (10.16 cm)

A pair of small scale Kangxi Period Wucai porcelain jars, decorated with floral and foliate motifs.

Wucai (five colours) describes a type of porcelain which is fired as a plain base, then coloured in rich polychrome enamels such as blue, yellow and green and fired once over. In comparison to famille verte porcelain, for example, its outlines are very crisp and its colours deep; which lead to the wucai family being called “yingcai” (hard colour).

This particular pair has a creamy background and vivid complementary colours of red and green, yellow and blue which are particularly appealing.

Later wooden lids (one slightly damaged).

Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period (1662 – 1722)
