While the literal translation for famille rose is ‘the rose family’ the Chinese ‘Fencai’, ’Runancai’ or ‘Yangcai’ can also be translated as ‘soft colours’ or ‘foreign colours’. This, of course, relates to the light colour palette of this type of porcelain as much as the fact that it was made for the European market. The time during which famille rose was produced, coincided with the Rococo in France which favoured the pastel colour scheme of the Chinese export ware.
