Guardi and Canaletto are perhaps the two greatest painters of Venice and their works record the golden age of the city during the 18th century. Unsurprisingly, images by them were much collected and sought after and copies were in high demand during their lifetimes and later.
This fine view depicts part of the Grand Canal seen from one bank. The first building is the church of Santa Lucia, followed by a series of constructions of similar height including the now demolished palaces of Lion-Cavazza and Bragadin-Vescovi, leading the eye to Santa Maria di Nazareth, better known in the present day as Santa Maria degli Scalzi. It is this stretch that many modern visitors first encounter as they leave the railway station which now occupies the site.
The Original is with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid
