Follower of John Ward of Hull (1798 – 1849)

“A Coastline with Warships”

Oil on canvas held in period style giltwood frame. Dimensions refer to outer size of frame.

John Ward was born in 1798, the son of a master mariner, Abraham Ward who was also a painter and his wife Sarah (née Clark). He was apprenticed as a house painter to Thomas Meggitt. By 1826, Ward was listed in the local Hull Directory as a “House and Ship Painter”.

Ward exhibited several paintings in 1827 at the Hull and East Riding Institute for the Promotion of the Fine Arts. He subsequently produced small watercolour paintings and some larger oils of local maritime and shipping scenes. Contemporary painters of views such as the present picture were very much influenced John Ward. Compositionally this work most certainly shows his influence.
