A snuff bottle with overlay decoration

The Chinese considered smoking tobacco distasteful and therefore snuff, made by mixed tobacco with herbs and spices, was believed to have medicinal properties (it was considered a cure for migraines). Inhaled through the nose, it often caused one to sneeze, which was believed to be a way of purging illnesses and impurities.

The Chinese court did not have access to large quantities of snuff until Jesuit missionaries, who were hoping to gain access to the 'Forbidden Kingdom,' in 1684, presented Kangxi, the second emperor of the Qing Dynasty, with an elaborate snuff box. The emperor was very pleased by this precious gift and he realised that, owing to China's humid climate, traditional Chinese medicine bottles made better snuff containers. Thus, Emperor Kangxi had beautiful snuff bottles made for himself and his family. Soon, delicately handcrafted and ornate snuff bottles were a wildly popular symbol of status in the Imperial court—tobacco, imported from the New World, was prohibitively expensive for most commoners. For the upper classes in Chinese society, a snuff bottle was an essential accessory. Whilst in conversation with his peers, a Chinese man or rank would pull out his bottle and offer snuff to share so that the others could admire its beauty. For this reason, the bottles were also used in bribes.

Usually standing three inches tall or less, antique snuff bottles were made from a various materials including jade, agate, porcelain, glass, and precious stones like tourmaline, ruby matrix, and amethyst. The carved, molded, or painted designs on snuff bottles included plant and animal totems intended to convey blessings. The bottles also came with spoons, originally made out of ivory but later from bone, metal and tortoise shell.

The most treasured Chinese snuff bottles come from the Courts of Yongzheng and Qianlong. Their artisans had learned the process of enamelling and painting on metal or glass from the Jesuits. For this reason, many of the resulting bottles were painted with European-style Catholic iconography.

A nineteenth century carved bamboo brush pot, the outer surfaces with carved decoration depicting figures and pagodas in a mountainous landscape.

This brush pot would have been an essential item at any traditional Chinese scholars’ desk; to complete it, the intellectual would have also laid out an ink stone, an ink cake, a brush rest and, of course, a brush. This densely carved example depicts a detailed mountainscape. The colour of the bamboo varies in places, emphasising the three dimensional effect of the carving and stressing the texture of the elements.

A 19th century bronze trumpet vase with elephant mask handles to the stem.

This well proportioned vase has, over time, acquired a warm and mellow tone. Its smooth geometric forms and solid surface stand in stark contrast to the carved, anatomic and lively heads of the Kakiemon Elephants. In Japanese mythology (as, in fact, in Buddhism) the elephant serves as a symbol of strength and power of mind.

Apart form the flower’s religious connotation (where it has been associated with the Virgin Mary or the blood of Christ) it also rouses the simple human delight and has, in recent history, often been associated with love, enchantment and respect.

Seeds of the sweet pea were first introduced to England from Italy in the 17th century. It was, however, only after the Scotsman Henry Eckford cross bread the plant that the sweet smelling flower we know today was created. Although interest in botanical research can be traced back as far as the Neolithic times, the 19th century saw a real change in the way science corresponded knowledge. With the rise of specialist journals and schools-of-thoughts outside traditional circles questioning accepted theories and being given a chance to publish their findings, the great era of plant specification expanded. As a result, displaying real life studies of a botanical nature, such as the one depicted here, were considered a testament to ones cultural understanding as much as a demonstration of ones Darwinian interests in science and evolution.

Although interest in botanical research can be traced back as far as the Neolithic times, the 19th century saw a real change in the way science corresponded knowledge. With the rise of specialist journals and schools-of-thoughts outside traditional circles, questioning accepted theories and being given a chance to publish their findings, the great era of plant specification expanded. As a result, displaying real life studies of a botanical nature, such as the one depicted here, were considered a testament to ones cultural understanding as much as a demonstration of ones Darwinian interests in science and evolution.

A Regency Period mahogany console table having a D-form top supported by turned legs with a concave lower shelf.

The underlying theme for Regency furniture was taken from the ancient and the Classical; and whilst pieces were certainly grand, they never failed to be tidy, neat and rigorously symmetrical as can be observed in this piece. Greco-Roman architectural motifs such as doric, ionic, composite and caryatid columns, mouldings, fluting, decorated friezes and tympanums were carved into wood and lent the finishing touches. To add warmth to these otherwise slightly stiff, architectural creations, cabinet makers turned to woods with attitude. Rosewood and mahogany, which were easily available, were often favoured due to their rich colour and texture.

An unusually large pair of patinated cast iron garden urns in the Classical manner.

In original weathered condition.

While in Europe the traditional funeral urn only dates back as far as the late 16th century and early 17th century, the Chinese have been know to manufacture examples as early 7000 BC. During the 18th century, urns manufactured of marble as well as artificial stone started making frequent appearances in gardens of grand European estates. The 19th century saw a peak in garden urns manufactured of iron and terracotta, with Val d’Osne being the most popular in France.
