MANNER OF VAN HUYSUM

Jacob van Huysum was born in Amsterdam circa 1687 and became an important Northern Netherlandish botanical painter. Both his father, Justus van Huysum (1659 -1716), and his brother, Jan van Huysum (1682–1749), were celebrated flower painters and his own style of painting was very close to that of his brother. His approach to floral illustration, while preserving botanical accuracy, captured a very painterly aspect of his subjects.

This painting is very close to the work of Van Huysum and it does have an old signature. However, we feel in consultation with other specialists, that this work is not by Jacob van Huysum, but a good contemporary follower.

This portrait in the MANNER OF DANIEL GARDNER depicts the head of a young woman, pensively looking to the side. Her cerulean blue dress and white head-dress not only frame the face of the maiden artistically, but also suggest a festive occasion. The facile elegance and sketch-like nature of this study appear almost impressionist in style. Whilst the background of this image is sketched loosely enough to allow the canvas to peer through, the face of the woman is fully formed, a wonderful play of light and shade illuminating her translucent skin.

CHARLES DEANE

Charles Deane was a prolific London landscape painter. He was also a great traveller who wandered from from Putney to the Rhine, from Wharfedale to Scheldt, from Maidstone to the Moselle and Meuse, painting the scenes he encountered. However, his best known works are views of the River Thames and landscapes from the Bristol countryside.

Deane showed his work at the Royal Academy from 1815 to 1851. He also displayed at the British Institution, exhibiting 103 paintings there (landscapes and also marine subjects). He also exhibited eight paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists.

His work was highly appreciated by his contemporaries and often featured in the prestigious Art Union prizes.

Deane’s Continental pieces tend to be more gaudy and hard, where as his river banks of the Thames are calmer and subtly coloured. Some of his canvases are large, over eight feet wide.

Deane lived in Blandford Place, Regents Park, London from 1822 to 1851.

This example of Deane's work was painted from the river around Marble Hill looking west towards Eel Pie Island with the Church of St. Mary’s to the centre. It depicts the Thames on a summer's evening. It has an Arcadian serenity that is typical of Georgian landscape painting.

EDWIN FREDERICK HOLT

E.F. Holt was a London painter of mythological, biblical, historical and genre subjects but he is perhaps best known today for his scenes of agricultural life.
\nHe went on to exhibit his work, 36 at Suffolk Street from 1850 - 1865; 12 paintings at the British Institution from 1853 - 1860 and 7 paintings at the Royal Academy from 1854 - 1858 a fact of which he was particularly proud, as thereafter he signed his paintings and inscribed them
\n “Prize Medal R.A”.
\nHolt is known to have lived at 50 Bayham Street, Camden Town; 1 Poland Street; 34 Sloane Street and 1 Alma Road, Croydon.
\nThis set of portraits is most unusual and he would turn his hand to painting almost anything. It is likely that these were collected by historians.

FREDERICK E.J. GOFF

Goff was born in London in 1855 where he lived, worked and died. He was a painter of the most atmospheric London topographical views, working on a small scale using a magnifying glass to paint in remarkable detail.

Goff exhibited his work from 1890 at the Royal Academy and at The New Watercolour Society. He also painted views of the Thames and Kentish landscapes.

His works provide a pictorial and historically fascinating record of London at the end of the 19th Century.

A pair of late nineteenth century hardwood console tables, having chamfered returns, re-entrant corners and stretcher bases.

The term ‘huali’ dates back to pre-modern times and has today been extended to ‘huanghuali’. The addition has been made to refer to the mellowed yellow tones that antique examples of the wood adopt when exposed to light. A member of the rosewood family huanghuali too exudes the characteristically sweet fragrance which lingers for years after felling. Huanghuali was the preferred timber for scholar’s furniture during the Ming Period and often bears ghost-like faces in their grain.

A Classical landscape depicting figures on horseback beside an obelisk and a lake with mountainous backdrop

James Ross is known for his sporting pictures and pastoral landscapes in the manner of Gainsborough, but his main influence seems to have been Jan Wyck and there is often confusion of attribution.

He was an artist of considerable accomplishment with his hunting scenes set in a spacious layout. The tone and colouring in his works are of fine quality and usually include a group of elegant figures as can be seen in this painting.

A mid-18th century carved giltwood mirror in the rococo taste.

The rococo movement affected all the arts in the second quarter of the eighteenth century including painting, sculpture, architecture, interior design, literature, music, and theatre. It found its origins in France and grew as a reaction against the grandeur of the Baroque.

Concerning interior design from this period, forms became asymmetrical, even jocular and most certainly florid in their conception incorporating witty and playful themes. In painting and sculpture, the this playful style is epitomised by the works of Antoine Watteau and François Boucher

A set of four late-19th century prints of Roman views after the originals by Piranesi

Giovanni Battista Piranesi was born in Mogliano Veneto, near Treviso, which at the time was in the Republic of Venice. Inspired by his brother Andrea he studied Latin and Ancient Civilisation. He later trained as an architect under his uncle, Matteo Lucchesi, an excavation engineer.

From 1740 Piranesi was based in Rome with Marco Foscarini, the Venetian envoy to the Vatican. He resided in the Palazzo Venezia studying under Giuseppe Vasi, who introduced him to the art of etching and engraving. He collaborated with pupils of the French Academy in Rome to produce a series of vedute (views) of the city.

This proximity to Ancient Rome enabled Piranesi to understand and accurately imitate the remains with a remarkable understanding of the fabric of the extant structures. This exposure also inspired him to create fantastical architectural scenes such as his Carceri series (Prisons), published in 1750.

Piranesi's plates were collected and preserved by his son, Francesco and 29 folio volumes comprising some 2,000 prints appeared in Paris between 1835 and 1837.

Just as the late Baroque works of Claude Lorrain and Salvatore Rosa had featured romantic depictions of Classical ruins, Piranesi's reproductions of real and recreated Roman remains were a strong influence on the whole Neoclassical movement.

A Regency giltwood convex mirror, the circular frame with beaded decoration and acanthus motifs having an inner circle of ebonised balls

In the Regency Period, these mirrors were the focal point of an interior and were placed above a chimney piece, their convex plates creating a wide-angled reflection of the rooms in which they hung.

This convex mirror was inspired by Classical architecture and has become iconic in Regency furniture design. Its circular form is taken from the Roman oculus (a circular window), one of the finest examples being that in the dome of the Pantheon in Rome. An oculus, plural oculi, from Latin oculus: eye, denotes a circular opening in the centre of a dome or in a wall. It is also known as an 'œil de boeuf' from the French meaning bull's-eye and convex mirrors such as this have also become referred to as 'bull's-eye mirrors'.

The earliest known image of a convex mirror can be found in a painting by the Early Netherlandish artist Jan van Eyck - The Arnolfini Marriage - which dates to 1434 and now resides at The National Gallery, London.

A giltwood girandole with beveled mirror plate and having a brass candle arm.

This mirror dates to the end of the nineteenth century. The design is a close representation of one of the most recognisable forms in early eighteenth century English furniture: a shaped frame with corresponding beveled plate. This is most closely associated with furniture from the reigns of Queen Anne (who reigned from 1702-1714) and George I (1714-1726). This example closely follows earlier models in its scale and proportions. The brass candle arm has also been shaped and fashioned in the traditional eighteenth century manner.

For an historic outline of English looking glasses we would recommend 'World Mirrors 1650-1900' by Graham Child - Sotheby's Publications, London, 1990.

A mid-19th century cut glass bonbonnière with lid.

This lead glass bonbonniere was made in the early Victorian era. It is a good survival from this period as it retains its original lid. The glass has a dark transparency, typical of pieces from this time. The surfaces are cut throughout and the overall form is based on Classical principals.

Lead glass is a variety of glass in which lead replaces the calcium content of a earlier potash glass. Lead glass is desirable owing to its decorative properties. Originally discovered by an Englishman George Ravenscroft in 1674, the technique of adding lead oxide improved the appearance of the glass and made it easier to melt using sea-coal as a furnace fuel. This technique also made the glass easier to manipulate enabling manufacturers to be ever more creative and ambitious in their designs.

The term lead crystal does not accurately describe lead glass, as glass, an amorphous solid, lacks a crystalline structure.

A pair of hand caved and painted wooden lamp bases in the classical taste, the column stems with fern decoration and set upon plinth bases.

This lamp base takes its name from the Chateau de Chanteloup near Amboise in The Touraine, France. The original chateau was home to Claude Antoine Gabriel, Duc de Choiseul-Stainville - a supporter of Louis XVI who helped the Royal family in their attempt to escape from Paris on 20 June 1791.

De Choiseul was arrested with the King, and imprisoned and later set free in May 1792. He fled France that October, to fight against the French Republic in the émigré army of Louis Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé. He was captured in 1795, confined at Dunkirk where he again escaped, set sail for India, was shipwrecked on the coast of France, and then condemned to death upon capture by the decree of the French Directory. Nevertheless, he was fortunate enough to escape a third time. Under Napoleon Bonaparte he returned to France in 1801 and was ultimately reinstated in the House of Peers under Louis XVIII. He died a free man in 1830.

While the original Chateau de Chanteloup no longer survives, perhaps the most magical folly in the region is extant - The chinoiserie stone pagoda which stands an incredible 107 feet tall (44 metres).

These lamp bases echo the traditions of this noble folly de grandeur.

A pair of painted wooden lamp bases of bulbous form, having overlaid turned decoration.

This pair of lamps take their name from the Château de Brissac, in the Loire valley. It is known for its huge towers and fortifications which enclose an assortment of classical facades. The Château is surrounded by an extensive parkland which takes its inspiration from the Romantic Period.

The rotund nature of this lamp bases is reminiscent of the heavy round towers of Brissac.
