An Early 18th Century William & Mary Period Side Chair

£1,850

SOLD

An early 18th century upholstered side chair in the William & Mary manner, the frame with square back set upon four faceted cabriole legs and joined by elongated cross stretchers.

The ‘William and Mary’ period refers to a style within the decorative arts employed during the reign of William III and Mary II. William, who came from the House of Orange, brought to England an interest in Dutch and French styles. Designs under his and Mary’s reign brought a subtle sophistication to furniture design. In this respect, late Stuart furniture is transitional and bridged the stylistic gap between mid-17th century design and that of the early Georgian era.

This chair is upholstered in raw silk.
