Biedermeier was an influential period originating in Germany between 1815 and 1848. It later spread to Scandinavia and Austria, where a rising middle class enjoyed the simplistic take on the French Empire Style. Clean lines and local materials were applied to create the Biedermeier look. Austrian cabinetmakers were considered especially creative, since an apprentice was tested on their skill, innovation and imagination in order to be approved into the guild of cabinetmakers. Biedermeier was the first furniture movement arising from the middle class.
