An early 19th century ebonised centre table, having a black fossil marble top set upon turned tapering stem with fine engine-turned brass socle upon a tri form concave plinth base raised on brass castors.
This table was made during the Napoleonic Period at a time when the Classical revival had reached its apogee in terms of purity of form. The form is devoid of unnecessary embellishments, in favour of the most simple outline which derives from the purist of ancient Classical architecture.
Centre tables can be used today in entrance halls for the display of flowers and in drawing rooms as a surface for framed photographs, lamps and decorative objects. In this respect its function remains the same as originally intended – a statement piece for incorporation within a domestic interior.
