A 17th century kraakware charger of medium scale with blue and white glazes throughout.
The history of Kraak porcelain begins during the Emperor Wanli’s reign (1563-1620) in the Ming dynasty. In the XVI century, the Dutch followed the Portuguese into trading Chinese antiques and after a short period of time, this particular style of blue-and-white porcelain gained huge popularity in the Netherlands.
There are a a number of hypothesis concerning the etymology of the name “kraak,” but the commonly held belief ties the name to the Carracks – the Portuguese ships originally used for transporting this fragile cargo back to Europe.
This plate dates to the turn of the seventeenth century and is a remarkable survival from this time.
