‘Winter River II was painted in mid-winter when you often get more light on the river rather than less – because all the leaves have been stripped off the trees. Here, you can see the far bank reflected in the water. All the thousands of tiny twigs and branches and the detail of it shimmering away in its reflection. It’s a rather different painting from the rest because of the detail I wanted to capture in it.’
