A pair of Derby porcelain vases, each with central cartouche: the first depicting Kirnstall Abbey Yorkshire; the second showing a view near Derby.

The Derby factory was founded on Nottingham Road around 1745. The story began with an entrepreneur named Andrew Planche, who migrated from France to England to escape the religious suppression of the Huguenots. A contemporary account described him as being a foreigner in very poor circumstances. In 1745, he was only 17 years old.

Andrew Planche experimented with ingredients which he hoped would produce a similar material to that being successfully developed at Meissen in Germany.

In 1756 William Dewsbury, who had previously worked as a porcelain decorator in London, brought his considerable business acumen to the venture. A local banker John Heath contributed the financial backing.

The Public Advertiser first mentioned the Derby Factory in December 1756, urging readers to participate to an auction sale in London, sponsored by the Derby Porcelain Manufactory.

Derby quickly became on of the most important sites of English porcelain manufacturing and had become eponymous with the production of exceptional quality porcelain in the early 1750s. Many of the early figures and patterns were taken from paintings, drawings and sculpture from China and later Japan. The flower spray, adapted from Japanese porcelain of the 17th Century survives today at many factories and on many differing bodies.

This pair of vases was made in the late Regency Period. The campaign vase is an entirely Classical form and the gilded decoration is typical of ornament from circa 1830.

A mid-nineteenth century oak pillar box with pitched roof, brass letter flap and lock escutcheon with glazed door and set upon a plinth.

The oak tree is characterised by the strength and durability of its wood. With age, its palette becomes mellow and honey coloured, as can be seen here. Although letterboxes were already common across the continent, the British Post Office started encouraging individuals to install post boxes around 1849. During the 1960s the hexagonal post box, on which this example is modelled, became the national standard. It was then that the colour red was adopted as the shade public mailboxes are still known for today.

A large scale Sang de Boeuf vase of baluster form.

The name ‘sang de boeuf’ refers to the colour of the vase, which is French for ‘ox blood’. The difficult manufacturing process of this shade, which is achieved through an oxidisation process of iron and copper, was first recorded in China between the 11th and 13th century. European earthenware producers were not able to replicate the lengthily firing process involved in the production of song de boeuf until the 20th century, leaving China to monopolise on such wares for centuries.

A set of three late eighteenth century famille rose vases decorated with floral vignettes upon a white ground.

Famille rose, ‘the pink family’, was first introduced to the genre of Chinese ceramics in the first quarter of the 17th century. The palette of soft pinks, yellows and greens on a white, clean background was largely influenced by a European (more specifically French) taste. The Macaron-like shades of the famille rose alined neatly with the mode of the Rococo, fashionable in France at the time. Contrary to the famille verte palette of the previous era, famille rose designs could be fired at a lower temperature, allowing for softer shades to survive the firing process.

This vases are of conservative taste with elegant features and muted colours. The design is European in taste and subject. Whilst their milky white backgrounds are dominant, the colourful central panels are the focal point of the vases.

A large scale famille verte vase decorated thorughout with stylised flowers and mythical birds.

Famille verte, meaning ‘the green family’ was developed during the Ming period. Its colours are usually red, green, blue and black, but it is the great variety of greens that really lend the ‘family’ its name.

This large vase, featuring a bird, is decorated in lush and rough green foliage and dark reds, blues and yellows. It was manufactured in the late 19th century for the European market.

A nineteenth century tea dust glaze bottle vase of gourd form.

This vase of olive colour has a reflective glazed surface and is of globular form that rises from a spreading foot.

Tea dust refers to a green speckled glaze which is fired at extremely high temperatures. It is speculated that the technique was developed in order to imitate bronze wares.
