A pair of late eighteenth century clobbered vases of baluster form, retaining their original covers.

Originally, the term ‘clobbered’ referred to blue and white ceramics that were exported to Europe where colourful enamel was added to their surface. This was the practice both on the Continent and in the United Kingdom.

In the case of this pair, the additional colour is extensive, covering almost all available surfaces. The densely applied brilliant colours are in very good condition. The painting is well executed, the design evenly balanced, terminating in a turquoise flourish.

A Pair of Blue Ground Sevres Vases & Covers.

The porcelain factory in Sevres, France, has been famous for producing fine, detailed and gilded porcelain of the highest quality for centuries. During the second half of the 18th century, the producer was one of the most dominant porcelain manufacturers in Europe. Today, Sevres porcelain is of high collectable value and demand continues to grow.

Each of the vases and covers features a central panel of oval form depicting a pair of courting lovers painted in a Rococo manner. The blue background holds playful and elaborate gilt decorations of foliage, vine leaves and ornamental shapes and forms suggesting a Baccic connotation and, hence, one related to food, drink and entertainment.

A large scale sang de boeuf vase of baluster form.

The name ‘sang de boeuf’ refers to the colour of the lamp, which is French for ‘ox blood’. The difficult manufacturing process of this shade, which is achieved through an oxidisation process of iron and copper, was first recorded in China between the 11th and 13th century. European earthenware producers were not able to replicate the lengthily firing process involved in the production of song de boeuf until the 20th century, leaving China to monopolise on such wares for centuries.

A pair of large scale crackleware vases, the bodies with blue and white glazes and having matt brown collars and bases.

This type of greyish white stoneware is covered in a net of fine, decorative crackles. Whilst this technique originated in 13th century China, it has sparked particular interest amongst collectors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Its bronze mounts depict clouds and botanical motifs. The large peonies incorporated in the glaze are amongst the first flowers incorporated in Chinese art. The flower “of riches and honour” has, in more recent times, been voted China’s national flower.

A nineteenth century celadon vase with trumpet form neck.

The first recorded types of celadon stem from the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 - 220 AD). The mostly pale green wares often have an accentuated crackled glaze and are predominantly minimalist in design. Their name is thought to have been inspired by the protagonist of a well known 17th century French novel, L’Astre, called Celadon who was famously associated with the colour green.

This example is of good scale and decorated in muted botanical motifs.

A baluster form vase with rich flambe glaze.

This rich, glossy vase is of good proportion and excellent quality. The saturated flambé glaze was first discovered between the 11th and 13th century in China and original examples are extremely rare today. The firing process for this type of object involves an oxidisation process of iron and copper which results in various shades from brilliant ox blood to deep purple. Examples with streaks of colour interrupting the dark base colour, as can be seen here, were especially sought after during the 19th century.

A generously proportioned famille rose vase with gilded highlights.

Chinese Canton porcelain was manufactured and fired in the kilns of Ching-Te Chen. From there, works were taken to the port at Canton, where finishing touches were applied by local artists and goods were shipped to Europe and America. The large central panel, usually depicting interior or exterior scenes, is one of the trademarks of Canton porcelain as opposed to other Chinese Export porcelain of the same time.

This vase is of good scale and proportion. It has four false, gilt handles in the shape of traditional fu lions. The individual panels depict scenes with figures in an architectural setting as well as designs with butterflies, birds and flowers. The colours are extraordinarily vibrant and rich.

A nineteenth century blue and white glazed tea canister of octagonal form.

This vessel finds its origins in the time-honoured Chinese tea culture. Traditionally, tea drinking was linked with social status and education. At this, Chinese scholars often frequented tea houses to share freshly brewed leaves as a sign of respect towards their elders, to celebrate family gatherings or as a method of apology. The European discovery of tea caused a sensation and tea leaves became as important and lucrative a commodity as porcelain and fine silks.

It is of octagonal shape and decorated with a traditional Chinese dragon motif. Its smooth background has a beautiful pearly blue tint.

A famille rose beaker vase of good scale decorated throughout with floral vignettes and birds of paradise.

Famille rose, ‘the pink family’, was first introduced to the genre of Chinese ceramics in the first quarter of the 17th century. The palette of soft pinks, yellows and greens on a white, clean background was largely influenced by a European (more specifically French) taste. The Macaron-like shades of the famille rose alined neatly with the mode of the Rococo, fashionable in France at the time. Contrary to the famille verte palette of the previous era, famille rose designs could be fired at a lower temperature, allowing for softer shades to survive the firing process.

This beaker vase is of very good scale and has a well proportioned bulbous centre. Its fine decoration of flowers, birds and butterflies was applied according to European tastes.

A Famille Verte vase of good scale.

Famille verte, meaning ‘the green family’ was developed during the Ming period. Its colours are usually red, green, blue and black, but it is the great variety of greens that really lend the ‘family’ its name.

This vase is of good size and condition. Its palette is rich with highly detailed, linear and crisp decoration. The expertly applied geometric design to top and bottom creates a three-dimensional effect as well as an illusion of texture.

A famille noire vase of square tapering form the side panels pierced with figurative scenes.

Famille noir, meaning ‘the black family’, is a sub category of the famille verte group. Though set on a black background, it shares other characteristics of the ‘green family’. The additional black component is created during a complicated process in which green lead based enamel is applied over a dark cobalt ground. During the firing process the two materials merge, thereby creating the solid, dark colour.

The example shown here holds densely decorated panels depicting figures in rich greens.

A pair of famille verte vases of good scale having figurative decoration on a white ground.

Famille verte, meaning ‘the green family’ was developed during the Ming Period. Its colours are usually red, green, blue and black, but it is the great variety of greens that really lend the ‘family’ its name.

True to its name, the green areas on this pair are dominant and offset beautifully against the milky white background of the pair.

A pair of late eighteenth century vases with floral decoration on a white ground.

The vases and covers are of conservative taste and muted colour. While the milky white background of the pair is dominant, it emphasises the pop of colour within the central panels, thus creating a focal point.

A mid-nineteenth century egg and spinach glazed amphora vase.

Egg and spinach (or tiger skin pattern) ceramics or stonewares are characterised by their stained glaze of yellows, browns and greens. To achieve this look, the colour was applied directly to the underglaze. Following this, a clear glaze was applied to seal the colour. The effect this method created is closely related to that of Chinese sancai porcelain which originated around the 8th century.

Amphoras, too, have a long standing history and were used to transport liquids and in some cases dry goods since Neolithic times.
