A scarce mezzotint engraved by James Watson published in May,1778. Proof before title; the image has maintained is rich dark tonality.

John Hely-Hutchinson (1724-1794) was a politician, lawyer and Provost of Trinity College, Dublin. Born in Gortroe, County Cork in 1724, he graduated from Trinity College in 1744, and swiftly built up a good practice at the Bar. From 1760 until his death he represented Cork in Parliament. Promotion to the post of Prime Serjeant followed in 1761 and on most issues he supported the Government, and acquired several lucrative offices. His appointment as Provost of Trinity as a married layman who had not been a Fellow was a continued source of friction as the Fellows resented the imposition of what they perceived as a career politician with no pretensions to scholarship. He was sympathetic to Catholic Emancipation and advocated the end of educational discrimination against Catholics.

A scarce mezzotint engraved by Valentine Green published in December 1780. As a proof the image has maintained is rich dark tonality.

This image is the most grandiose of Reynolds self-portraits as he visually positioned himself as both the heir of the old masters and a major figure of contemporary British society. The picture is indebted to the works of both Van Dyck and Rembrandt. His hero, Michelangelo, stands as a bust on the table behind. He is dressed in academic robes, as he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law by the University of Oxford in 1773. The title inscribed on the completed state of this print records his many distinctions: Sir Joshua Reynolds, Knight, President of the Royal Academy, Member of the Imperial Academy at Florence, Doctor of Laws of the Universities of Oxford and Dublin, And Fellow of the Royal Society.

Attributed to Cornelius de Neve (circa 1612-1678)

Portrait of John, Lord Belasyse (1614-1689)

Oil on canvas; held in a period style carved polished wood frame.

Dimensions refer to framed size.

Cornelius de Neve, was born in Antwerp, possibly training under the Dutchman Mierveldt and settling in London by 1627. It has been suggested he possibly associated with Van Dyck, though his works show a strong debt to painting in England prior to his arrival, particularly John de Critz who was his stepfather.

John Belasyse was born to a Yorkshire Catholic family. A soldier and administrator, during the Civil War, he raised six regiments for the king. He was imprisoned by the Parliamentarians on four occasions and was shot in the head during one battle, but recovered and remained a loyal royalist throughout the wars and Interregnum. At the Restoration his career was frustrated by his Catholicism; he was forced to resign as Governor of Tangier, and was implicated in the alleged Popish Plot (1678) for which he was imprisoned in the Tower for six years. Following James II’s accession to the throne, Belasyse took up a position at Court and in 1686 he was appointed Private Councillor of the King and the following year, First Lord of the Treasury. From 1671 until his death he lived at Whitton near Twickenham and was visited there by Samuel Pepys, who was impressed by Belasyse’s large collection of paintings.

Probably painted around 1635 it, if nothing else, is a detailed and decorative account of what the sitter wore, the clothes being almost identical to those depicted by Gilbert Jackson in a full length portrait, long held to be Lord Belasyse. Within a year of this portrait Van Dyck also produced a masterful rendition of the young nobleman.

Henry Pickering, Portrait of a Gentleman

Oil on canvas; signed and dated 1759; held in a giltwood period frame

Provenance: Lenygon & Morant Ltd. c.1900; Knoedler, October 1912 (Stock No.5452).

Henry Pickering was a fashionable and gifted portrait artist working in the style of the great Thomas Hudson. He travelled to Italy to learn from the old masters and seems to have returned to England, and London, by 1740. By the 1750s he seems to have worked as an itinerant portrait painter travelling largely around Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales eventually settling in Manchester in 1759 when he painted this portrait.

He was a highly successful artist and perhaps became so by not competing in the confines of the London art world. The gentry and successful middle classes of the North no doubt appreciated not needing to make the arduous journey South to have their “likeness taken” with Manchester at the heart of the progressing Industrial Revolution.

The sitter in this portrait has been depicted by Pickering as distracted, whilst turning the pages of a book; on closer inspection the volume being identifiable as that of a history of the notable county estates and the page showing depicting an engraved image of one such country house, possibly in Lancashire. This might be an indication as to the background of the sitter, though the imagery is sufficiently obscure to prevent obvious identification. Either way the portrait clearly depicts a handsome, extremely well dressed, young gentleman depicted in the height of fashion for the period. Pickering has painted in detail elements of his clothes, the embroidered coat and buttons being perhaps the most clear. The paint is fresh and the colours vibrant, the overall image being at once charming and striking.

Examples of his work are held in many national museums and galleries in England and Wales.

A nineteenth century blue and white glazed porcelain jar of bulbous form, with double happiness characters upon a foliate ground. Now mounted as a lamp with turned giltwood base.

Height dimensions refer only to lamp and giltwood base.

Typically the double happiness character is written in Chinese calligraphy, and frequently appears on traditional decorative items such as caskets and porcelain, being associated with marriage. The double happiness symbol often features throughout the wedding ceremony, as well as on gifts given to the bride and groom. This vase was most certainly a gift at a wedding in the nineteenth century.

Samuel Woodforde (1763-1817)

‘Invasion of Greece by Xerxes, 480 B.C.’

A group of four ink and watercolour paintings, circa 1800; held in gilded wood frames

Provenance: Earls of Yarborough, Brocklesbury Park, England

These fascinating watercolour paintings depict key moments in the Invasion of Greece by Xerxes I in 480 B.C.

Xerxes had spent years planning his invasion of Greece. It was to be his ‘divine punishment’ for his father Darius’ crushing defeat at Marathon in 490 BC. Now, a decade later, he had spared no expense in preparing a vast expeditionary force. After several years of planning, Xerxes’ huge army and navy travelled south from Sardis, through Thrace and Macedonia.

Faced with such an overwhelming force, only a small confederation of city-states, led by Athens and Sparta, determined to resist Xerxes. At most they possessed some thirty thousand men, and a few hundred ships against an invading force of over 100,000 Persian soldiers and some 1,200 ships. While the land army was advancing, there were several severe storms that shipwrecked much of the invading fleet, but unperturbed Xerxes ingeniously reorganised and eventually crossed the Hellespont (the Dardanelles) and reached Macedonia in the north of Greece by the Spring of 480 BC.

In response a contingent of 300 Spartans and several thousand allies were sent to occupy the narrow mountain pass of Thermopylae, not far from the Greek fleet that was anchored off the nearby coast at Artemisium.

It was a suicide mission, designed to detain the Persians just long enough for the rest of the Greek allies to gather their forces. Led by King Leonidas, the Spartans heroically held the Persians at bay for nearly a week until – outnumbered, betrayed and outflanked – they were finally defeated. Xerxes advanced southwards, capturing Boetia and Attica. He then entered and burned Athens. The Greek forces escaped to Salamis, where their navy destroyed the depleted Persian fleet. Xerxes left Greece, leaving General Mardonius to fight on. The Persians were defeated the following year (479 BCE) and were eventually driven out of Greece, the Aegean and Ionian islands.

Samuel Woodforde might have been moved to depict the subject of Xerxes after the English translation in 1791 by Rev. William Beloe of the Histories of Herodotus which gave an account of the Persian King’s invasion. Also in 1777 Robert Potter translated from the Greek the ancient play ‘The Persians’ written by Aeschylus in the 5^th century BC. Certainly there was interest in the historic subject matter around the end of the eighteenth century, enough maybe to elicit a commission from Lord Yarborough. Until recently these watercolours formed part of a leather bound folio which had been in the library at the family seat, Brocklesby Park, for many generations. Pasted as an elegant scrapbook, the illustrations accompanied a few others on ancient Greek history.

Woodforde was a talented artist who travelled to Italy in the late eighteenth century and by 1807 was elected a member of the Royal Academy in London. He made his name by painting sensitive portraits, bold historical scenes – as with these pictures – and engaging literary subjects such as episodes from Shakespeare.

After Daniel Maclise, nineteenth century

The Meeting of Wellington and Blücher after the Battle of Waterloo, 1875

Dimensions refer to size of frame.

Engraved by Lumb Stocks and published by the Art Union of London,1875

This engraving was produced from the fresco completed by Daniel Maclise in the Royal Gallery, Palace of Westminster, depicting the meeting of the Duke of Wellington and General Blücher at the end of the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815. They are shown shaking hands outside the ruins of Napoleon’s headquarters at the inn ‘La Belle Alliance’. Whilst celebrating a British victory, the grand composition presents the aftermath of the battle with dead and wounded figures dominating the foreground. James Dafforne, writing after Maclise’s death in 1872, described it as ‘at once the most faithful and the most modest of all the battle-subjects we have ever seen’, noting how the artist dealt ‘tenderly’ with the challenge of depicting the defeated troops of Napoleon to create a memorial of a great victory that was ‘without the flush of conquest’.

After Maurice-Quentin de La Tour

A Portrait of the Philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778)

Pastel on paper

This fine19th century pastel portrait of the philosopher Rousseau is directly drawn from the original by La Tour now in the Musee Antoine Lecuyer, Saint Quentin, France. As the art historian and pastel specialist Neil Jeffares observes, “a good many repetitions of La Tour’s works were made in his lifetime: some are evidently autograph…Others may be contemporary copies by unrelated artists. A substantial proportion however were probably made by pupils working under his guidance…unlike most pastellists La Tour evidently has a substantial studio and the practices and names of those involved have yet to be fully uncovered.” Certainly the skilful observation and the apparent spontaneity mark this out as an accomplished work and by an artist well aware of the techniques of La Tour.

Finished pastels emerged as a format for portraiture in France in the late 17th century and by the middle of the 18th century Maurice-Quentin de La Tour was among the most celebrated and accomplished portraitists in the medium. His considerable success led to commissions from the royal family, the court, the rich bourgeoisie and from literary, artistic and theatrical circles. Given this popularity and that of the Philosopher Rousseau it is unsurprising that a keen follower of La Tour’s work created this striking version of the famous portrait, capturing as it does, the nuances of character that make it one of La Tour’s finest images.

One of the most influential thinkers of the modern age, Rousseau’s writing was linked to many of the vogues that marked late eighteenth-century intellectual life, including the belief in the redemptive force of nature, the idealisation of childhood, and the freedom and equality of mankind. Many of his political theories were incorporated into the tenets of the French Revolution and he was idolised by later advocates of Romantic naturalism
