A Late 18th Century Louis XVI Period Walnut Commode

£2,900

SOLD

A late 18th century Louis XVI Period walnut commode, with two panelled drawers retaining the original rectangular brass handles and shield escutcheons, the sides of panelled construction, the whole raised on turned tapering feet and surmounted by the original grey marble top.

The fierce move away from the curves and swirls of the Rococo Period is apparent in this piece, made during the reign of Louis XVI of France. This commode has a restrained, logical and symmetrical design that is entirely architectural. Its variegated marble top has both colour and remarkable veining that serves as the predominant surface decoration of this piece.
