A Mid-18th Century George II Period Mayhogany Lowboy

A mid-18th century George II Period mahogany lowboy, the overhanging top above a configuration of four drawers, with pierced brass handles, above an arched front, set cabriole legs with outward pointing pad feet.

This lowboy is unusual in that it is constructed from mahogany. Stylistically the form is most closely associated with the age of walnut and is first recorded circa 1710. It is likely that this piece was made by a provincial yet highly skilled cabinetmaker, as earlier designs continued to be produced for the country market, some years after newer designs had taken hold in fashionable cities throughout Great Britain and Ireland.
