A Mid-20th Century Green Leather, Steel & Brass Club Fender

£2,200

SOLD

A mid-20th century club fender, the steel and brass frame of swept form, having deep buttoned green leather seats.

The club fender, first seen in the late eighteenth century, was designed to provide extra fireside seating in gentlemen’s clubs as well as in libraries and billiards rooms. They became very popular not only as functional pieces of furniture but as decorative items as well. Whilst the form – a three sided, backless bench – never changed, club fender designs have employed the use of different materials such as brass, steel and wood and varied details such as barley twist or fluted columns.
