A Pair of Late 19th Century Louis XVI Style Painted Bergeres

£3,400

SOLD

A fine late 19th century pair of painted bergere armchairs in the Louis XVI manner, with channelled frames, the arched backs having padded arms, the seats with drop-in cushions, the fluted tapering legs headed with paterae.

These enclosed armchairs with upholstered arms, backs as well as overstuffed seats were staples in any French grand home. The name “Bergere” translates to “shepherdess chair” describing the protective way in which the chair wraps around ones back to protect the face from the heat of the fire while keeping drafts at bay.
