A 19th century carved giltwood console table in the rococo manner, the shaped painted faux marble top set upon scrolling aprons and elaborate cabriole legs.
The Rococo style originated in Paris in the early 18th Century and was soon adopted throughout France and later in Germany, Austria and Britain. The French King, Louis XIV in his reign demanded more youthful art to be produced which paved the way for such forms. Rococo design is often asymmetrical and has many curvaceous features.
Rococo style is also referred to as the Late Baroque since it developed as Baroque artists moved away from symmetry to more fluid designs. The French term ‘Rocaille’ from which the word Rococo originates, means rock and shell and refers to the seashell like designs of the period. The Rococo style focused more on attention to detail, bright colours and decorative flair. Rococo style was developed in an organic manner by craftsmen and designers rather than the senior architects of the day.
This table was made at the end of the 19th century and represents a good example of the re-emergence of Rococo design in the late 1800s.
