An Early 19th Century Empire Period Mahogany Centre Table

£3,950

SOLD

A fine early 19th century Empire Period mahogany centre table, the black fossil circular marble top above a veneered frieze with finely chased brass mounts in the Classical taste, supported by a tapering stem and terminating in a triangular form plinth mounted in the same manner, set upon bun feet with the original sunken castors.

This prominent table has monumental architectural appeal. The dark and heavy mahogany as well as the black fossil marble top lend it the weighty, masculine aspect for which the French Empire Period is known. Austere, classically inspired lines, symmetry and brass embellishments link this table with Classical antiquity, stoic virtues and military conquests.
