A twentieth century terracotta Gandhara head.
Gandhara heads are sculptural fragments, typically depicting the Buddha or a Bodhisattva, from the ancient Gandhara region (present-day northwestern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan). These heads are famous for their unique Greco-Buddhist style, a fusion of Hellenistic (Greek and Roman) and Indian artistic traditions.
The present example has been set within a contemporary painted box frame.
