A 19th Century Marble Figure of Venus Bathing

A nineteenth century white marble figure depicting Venus bathing.

In the manner of Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain (1710 – 1795).

Allegrain was a French sculptor celebrated for his ability to temper the strong neoclassical style by injected Rococo charm and softness, into his work. He was influenced by the famous Jean-Baptiste Pigalle who was in fact his brother-in-law. His best known work, is a marble bather ‘La Baigneuse’, which was commissioned in 1755 for the royal residences through the Bâtiments du Roi. When exhibited at the Salon of 1767 it received great acclaim. Louis XV later presented it to Mme du Barry for her Château de Louveciennes.
