Dunluce Castle, Co. Antrim, with figures in the foreground

Oil on Canvas

Caroline Carlow was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Bute. A contemporary observer described her as “a most capital painter of oils”.

Dunluce Castle is a medieval ruin on the coast of Northern Ireland. It stands upon a cliff top in County Antrim (between Portballintrae and Portrush). It can be reached across a bridge which connects it to the mainland, here visible to the left of the canvas. The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on either side that made it a desirable site for fortification by early Christian and Viking settlers.
