A single hand caved and painted lamp base of bulbous form, the body taking the form of a pumpkin.

We have named this lamp base after the Château de Saumur, an historic town located in the Pays de la Loire region. Since its construction in the 11th century the Château has been a fortress, a prison, an arms depot and residence for the town governors. Overlooking the river Loire, the Château de Saumur now houses the town's museum.

Saumur is a well known wine region of the Loire. This elegant lamp base conjures up the traditions of this highly agricultural part of France.

A pair of painted lamp bases of vase form, the bodies with deep carving and set upon an octagonal socle.

The name of this lamp base is taken from the Château de Sully which is situated on the eastern side of the Loire valley. The château is famous for its wide moats, high towers and pepper pot roofs. Originally this was the grand manor for the Dukes of Sully. Maximilien de Béthune, first duke of Sully (1560 - 1641) was the right hand man to Henry IV of France. Sully was pivotal in the building of centralised administration in France.

The painted surface of these lamp bases imitates the colour and texture of stone from the Loire region.

His coronation was followed by the ill-prepared 1715 Jacobite Rising in Scotland which resulted in many members of the aristocracy and gentry commissioning images of the king in order to emphasise their loyality and allegiance to the crown under its new auspices. Kneller's original three-quarter or full-length commissions led to his studio and followers creating a number of head and shoulders variant as in our example. These found popularity, particularly after the distribution of engravings. This portrait has become one of the most memorable and enduring images of the early Hanoverian period.

Sir Godfrey Kneller was the master of English baroque portraiture and was the dominant force in British society portrait painting for over 40 years following the death of Sir Peter Lely in 1680. His style was so revered that his oeuvre was reproduced on a monumental scale through the new industry of engraving which influenced a much broader audience of followers of student portrait artists. shaping the approach to portrait painting well into the 1740s. A George III mahogany tripod table, the rectangular top with ribbon and flower carved border and set upon a turned stem with birdcage action, supported on generously carved tripod feet.

This table is made from mahogany, perhaps the wood most closely associated with English antique furniture. It is hard for us today to imagine just how highly prized a material it was when it first appeared in Europe in the mid-eighteenth century. Mahogany grows in Central America and the West Indies and British trading and colonial links with this region gave the United Kingdom direct access to this finely figured timber.

The man most closely associated with mahogany in English furniture history is Thomas Chippendale whose pattern book, 'The Gentlemen and cabinet maker's director' published in 1754, details elaborate designs for pieces to be executed in this fashionable timber. This tripod table with its finely turned stem and carved border relates closely to the designs of Thomas Chippendale. It is one of the best known forms from this period.

In addition to its beauty, this tripod table is also very functional - the tilt top allows it to be folded up for storage in the corner of a room when not in use. As a consequence it is just as useful now as it was in the eighteenth century.

This tripod table with its finely turned stem and carved border relates closely to the designs of Thomas Chippendale. It is one of the best known forms from this period.

In addition to its beauty, this tripod table is also very functional – the tilt top allows it to be folded up for storage in the corner of a room when not in use. As a consequence it is just as useful now as it was in the eighteenth century.

An early eighteenth century wing armchair the shaped frame with scrolling arm rests raised on carved walnut cabriole legs with scollop shell decoration and pointed pad feet.

The earliest wing armchairs date from the end of the seventeenth century. But it was not until the early eighteenth century that this form took on a sophisticated aspect, during the reign of Queen Anne (1702-1714). This example with its straight cresting rail and walnut cabriole legs with pointed pad feet dates from the reign of George I (1714-1726). The scallop shell carving to the knees of the front legs suggests a possible Irish origin.

Upholstered furniture was a tremendous domestic luxury in the early eighteenth century and armchairs such as these were made for the nobility, gentry and wealthy merchants. The form is most recognisably English and played an important role in the development of Georgian furniture design. It continued to be produced in varying forms until the 1770s, examples of this form ultimately becoming associated with the designs of Thomas Chippendale.

An early nineteenth century walnut console dessert the upper section having a single drawer with central lock escutcheon beneath a black fossil marble top, all supported upon turned column front legs with finely cast and chased brass capitals and socles and set upon a flame veneered plinth.

The console dessert is one of the best known forms in French furniture. It became particularly fashionable in the reign of Louis XVI and is typified by its two shelf construction, the upper tier typically having a marble top and supported by columnar legs. Typically made from walnut or mahogany, the best examples were adorned with finely chased brass mounts. A long central drawer to the upper frieze is typical in most designs.

This example dates from the early nineteenth century, the Empire Period in French furniture design. The pure Classical simplicity typifies the Napoleonic era in all aspects of architectural design and the boldness of the front supports relates entirely to the columns of an antique Roman portico. The brass mounts are of the finest quality and the walnut veneers are of rich colour and beautifully flamed. The black fossil top appears to be original to the piece.

A finely shaped Windsor armchair in the Gothic manner, the pointed arched yew wood back with pierced tracery fretwork decoration having armrests, all set upon a solid shaped elm seat and raised upon two cabriole front legs and two turned rear legs with spindle stretchers.

The 'Windsor' chair is a back stool of wedged construction, that is to say that its legs, back, arm rests and spindles are all wedged into a slab seat. This form of construction dates back to the Middle Ages and in its earliest forms was rudimentary with no turning or pierced decoration beyond the functional. By the eighteenth century, this simple and provincial form became refined as professional craftsmen embellished the model with elaborately turned spindles and pierced back splats.

The earliest know examples appear to originate in the Thames Valley around Berkshire and Surrey and most probably take their name from the most important town in that region - Windsor. The Thames was a major transport route into London and it seems plausible that the geographical position of Windsor made it a likely home to manufacturing without the City of London. It is also worth noting that the earliest references to the Windsor chair relate to places in the Home Counties west of London: in 1724, Lord Percival describes a visit to Hall Barn in Buckingham where his wife 'was carry'd in a Windsor chair like those at Versailles'. Evidently, these chairs were largely made for outdoor use and as with garden seat furniture at Versailles, they were often mounted on wheeled platforms for tours of the grounds of important country houses. Another reference to this is a drawing of circa 1733 which depicts two such chairs being drawn around the gardens of the Rotunda at Stowe.

The Windsor chair typically consists of a slab seat with vertical spindles, supporting a horizontal crest rail in earlier examples, or as in models from the last quarter of the eighteenth century, a bow-form back.

This example, made at the end of the nineteenth century, directly draws its inspiration from the late eighteenth century Windsor armchair and specifically relates to the rarest kind - the Gothic Windsor chair. The back splat looks directly to the Gothic revival as championed by Thomas Chippendale and his contemporaries in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. As in period models, this fine example also uses yew wood for its upper sections - an expensive timber and a wood with rich colour and dense figuring.

A painted dwarf bookcase in the Regency manner, the top decorated to simulate porphyry, the concave sides and opening imitating rosewood and articulated with gilded fluting, the whole raised on square tapering legs.

There has always been a tradition of painting furniture to simulate precious marbles and veneers. Porphyry is mined in Egypt and Scandinavia and is rarely found in large quantities (the most famous creation in this stone is the Tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte at Les Invalides in Paris). Rosewood originated in Brazil and was a highly prized timber in part because of the expense of transporting it to Europe. For this reason, European furniture was often constructed using indigenous woods and painted in imitation of these rare materials. This in itself is a painstaking process and ironically could be as costly as to employ the use of genuine materials.

An early nineteenth century walnut fauteuil or open armchair with upholstered back and seat, having a finely flamed crest rail, the arms, headed by carved scallop shells and supported by square tapering legs, the front surfaces inset with carved foliage, anthemia and five-pointed mullet ornaments.

This armchair was made at the turn of the nineteenth century and stylistically retains late eighteenth century elements - namely a lightness of form associated with the Directoire Period. Yet the broad flame veneered crest rail and restrained emblematic carved ornament is distinctively Empire in flavour, thus rendering this piece transitional in its design.

This fauteuil would once have belonged to a long suite of seating furniture including side chairs and canapés. It would have formed part of the furnishings of a grand salon in a French manoir. The use of walnut was still very much in fashion particularly in provincial towns where mahogany was less readily available. As possessions were split amongst family members as part of post-revolutionary inheritance law, sets of seating furniture were often broken up as they passed down through generations. While this fauteuil would once have existed within a formal salon setting, it would now make a perfect desk or dressing table armchair.

A rare early nineteenth century mahogany commode, the finely figured overhanging top above three graduated drawers with shaped ebonised panels, each with central gilt brass lock escutcheons (one replaced), the sides with finely chased gilt brass mounts of classical torches, the whole raised upon square tapering legs.

The precise origins of this commode remain a slight enigma although it can be placed within the Baltic region for a number of stylistic reasons. The panelled front relates to German furniture from the early nineteenth century and specifically designs of the Biedermeier Movement. These principles were also taken up by Scandinavian designers in the first decades of the nineteenth century. The gilt metal mounts on this piece look across the Baltic sea to Swedish metal work. And yet the overall drawing of this commode relates also to Russian forms. This would suggest that the cabinet maker behind this piece must have drawn upon a number of foreign influences and for this reason we have catalogued it as having been made in the Baltic region.

A mid-eighteenth century walnut commode, the serpentine overhanging top upon two short and two long drawers with incised paneling and set with finely chased foliate brass handles and lock escutcheons, the whole raised on shaped feet.

This piece was made during the reign of Louis XV of France (1715-1774), its serpentine form relating to the shapely forms of the rococo period. However, the foliate castings of the brass handles and the cartouche locks have a classical aspect which heralds the reign of Louis XVI (1774-1792).

A set of ten beechwood side or dining chairs in the Louis XVI manner, the oval backs and seats with carved detail and caning, all raised on turned carved and fluted legs, headed with paterae.

This long set of side chairs was made in the nineteenth century. The model is distinctly late eighteenth century French in design and such chairs would have been placed around the walls of a large room in an important house, being brought into use for dining or as salon chairs in a drawing or music room when required for social functions.

Beech wood was a popular timber for carving in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. its structure lends itself well to this technique. It is unusual to find such a long set and in such good condition.

A pair of floor standing Rouge Royal marble columns of good scale together with a pair of tazze, having finely turned bowls and scocles.

This pair of columns and tazze would have been made to stand either side of a grand commode or console table, most probably in a hallway or salon. This red marble was mined in Rance, Belgium, in the province of Hainaut. This area is provided marble for prestigious building projects as well as for decorative use.

It has been exploited since Roman times but became particularly popular from the 17th century with its prolific use in the Royal Chateau of Versailles which was built for King Louis XIV.

Large quantities were used for the most prestigious parts of the Palace of Versailles, including the walls of the 'Galerie des Glaces' (Hall of Mirrors). Also, the columns of the main portico on the 'Cour des Marbres' (Marble Courtyard). This project required such quantities of marble that a new quarry was established and named 'Trou de Versailles' (hole of Versailles) to satisfy the enormous demand needed for the French royal houses.

From the 18th century 'Rouge de Rance' became a popular material for fireplaces, clocks, and tops for console tables and commodes.

The mining of rouge marble in Rance ceased in the 1950s. In 1979, a museum dedicated to Belgian Marbles was opened there.

A pair of Siena marble tazzas of small scale, inlaid with green marble and having bronze mounts upon the plinth bases.

Siena marble is known for its fresh yellow veining. It is increasingly rare and exists in various degrees of colour richness depending upon the date of mining. Earlier mined Siena marble is a much darker yellow while more recent excavations are paler in colour. This pair of tazze has a richness of colour and veining which dates it to the nineteenth century and no later.

One of the most extraordinary uses of this marble can be seen in the inlaid floor of Siena Cathedral with its intricate Biblical scenes.

A very fine pair of carved painted fauteuils or open armchairs in the Louis XVI style, the shaped backs with palmette carving and upholstered medallion back rests, the swooping arms with padded rests and acanthus carving, set upon turned fluted legs headed with paterae, the seat frames richly carved with guilloche pattern.

This pair of open armchairs follows closely the designs of Geroges Jacob (1739-1814, master 1765). Jacob was perhaps the most highly regarded master menuisier in Paris and he produced the finest carved, painted and upholstered furniture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His name is synonymous with the finest furniture making of this period and his creations for the French royal châteaux (particularly Versailles), in the early Neoclassical style, are closely associated with the Louis XVI Period.

A late nineteenth century girandole, the frame of shaped form and having a scrolling brass candle arm.

This mirror was made at the very end of the nineteenth century when there was a revival of earlier forms of English furniture. The Queen Anne Period is synonymous with English furniture and Victorian interior decorators looked as much to this period as they did to the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic Movements.

This is stylistically close to eighteenth century originals, proportionally well drawn and beautifully executed in its construction and gilding.

A late eighteenth century parquetry commode, the plank top above three inlayed drawers with finely chased cast brass handles and escutcheons, the sides with geometric herringbone inlay, the whole raised on inlayed square tapering feet.

Fruitwood furniture of this type with geometric inlay is typical of the Piedmont region. The side panels are an unusual feature and display not only the finest figured veneers available at the time, but also exemplify the talent of the cabinet maker in question.

The sharp lines throughout are specific to the Neo-Classical Period as the restrained ornamentation (specifically the metalware).

A commode such as this would have been used as blanket chest for the storage of fine linens. Today such pieces continue to be used for this purpose and wooden topped commodes remain very popular for use in the bedroom.

A pair of monumental mid-century bronze masks attributed to Ettore Colla, a figure in the Novocento Movement which was founded in Milan in 1922.

These bronzes would appear to form part of a series of models for monuments and monumental sculptures Colla executed in the 1920s and 30s prior to giving up sculpture in 1942.

In 1950 he formed the Gruppo Origine, a body of artists devoted to conceptual art and sculpture.

These masks are of tremedous scale and have the greatest theatrical appeal. They would complete the most dramatic interior.
