A Mid-18th Century George II Period Mahogany Fretwork Mirror

A mid-18th Century mahogany fretwork mirror, the carved, pierced and shaped crest and apron set about a rectangular frame with parcel gilding.

In the late 18th century, English cabinet makers often incorporated interlaced decorative designs known as ‘fretwork’ into their works, especially during the Rococo period. Fretwork is either carved into the wood in low relief on a solid background (‘blind fretwork’) or cut out with a variety of different tools, as in this example. This robust mahogany mirror is a good example of English fretwork design from he mid 1700s.
