A late 19th century brass inlaid mahogany bureau plat or writing table, having a brown leather writing surface, the top concealing two additional slides on the return sides, above a long and short drawer configuration, all supported upon turned fluted legs with brass sabots.
The Directoire Period is transitional and ties the Louis XVI and Empire styles. The movement had its inception under Louis XVI of France. The Revolution of 1789 meant that the direction of style and fashion altered to satisfy the tastes of the revolutionary class, which ardently admired the ancient Roman Empire.
Pieces identifed with the Directoire style carry on the direct tradition of Louis XVI classicism treated with greater severity as in this example.
